On March 2, 1965, Robert Wises film adaptation of Rodgers and HammersteinsThe Sound of Music starring a brilliant, joyous Julie Andrews first premiered in the U.S.
Based on the story of Maria von Trapp, a governess who taught a strict naval captains seven children how to sing and won their fathers heart in the process, the musical picked up 10 Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Actress for Andrews, and won five, including Best Picture.
The films power and popularity hasnt waned a bit over the last half-century; in 2013, NBC airedThe Sound of Music Live, which kicked off the recent trend of live telecast musicals (though the TV event was widely hate-watched, in large part due to fans loyalty to Wises film).
For the movies 50th anniversary in 2015,Lady Gaga performed a tributeat last years Oscar ceremony, of which Andrews herself expressed sincere appreciation.
