Another week, another troubled-gay-dads play.
That is perhaps unfair toSteve, which opened last night in a New Group production at the Signature Center.
And it arrives nine days afterDada Woof Papa Hot, which explores much the same territory.

Its an enjoyable 90 minutes, with laugh-out-loud moments, but its also mostly meaningless.
Funny, but glib.
Theyre not singers, really, but theyre game, and theyre enjoying themselves.
When curtain time comes, someone calls places, and the play begins.
But the tone has been set: The evening is to be a rollicking good time.
Its a jokey and musicals-quoting crowd, with references to lyrics fromGypsyandCompanyand to the production history ofEvita.
The shtick-at-the-piano bar tone doesnt stop.
(Steven, likeCompanys Joanne, orders a vodka stinger.)
Then Steven hooks up with Esteban.
Its a musicals-loving gay teenagers fantasy of how actual, adult gay men speak and interact.
Matt and Brian remain besotted and horny.
Then cast returns, to do their bows toThe Sound of Musics So Long, Farewell.
With full choreography, of course.
