In a moving tribute, Sara Bareilles helped the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences honor the many Hollywood iconswho died in 2016with a poignant performance of Joni Mitchells Both Sides, Now during the specialIn Memoriam tribute.

The Grammy- and Tony-nominated singer took the stage at the 89th annual Oscars on Sunday in Los Angeles alongside her signature piano to sing the tune beneath a montage of late stars, including Carrie Fisher, Gene Wilder, and Garry Marshall.

Bareilles was introduced by actress Jennifer Aniston, who also paid tribute to actor Bill Paxton,whose deathdue to complications from surgery was reported earlier Sunday.

As was our beloved friend who left us yesterday, Bill Paxton, all were loved and all will be missed, Aniston said.

In recent years, the In Memoriam tribute has been performed byDave Grohl, who sang Blackbird in 2016,Bette Midler, who sang Wind Beneath My Wings in 2014, andEsperanza Spalding,who sang What A Wonderful World in 2012.
