He wouldnt talk about that.

ROD FERGUSSON:It was an interesting process.

We felt like human-on-human conflict was not aGearsgame.

You have to have a monster to be aGearsgame.

So we felt like that was a problem.

And you end up with the Roger, Roger robots, right?

We felt like the prequel wasnt the right way to go.

And so then we talked about a new origin story.

Do we tell or retell the Marcus story and put our own spin on it?

Then we felt like that wasnt really what were here to do.

Were not here to reimagine the past or recreate this thing.

That felt really wrong.

Then we talked about an alternate planet and lets go somewhere else.

But then we realized by doing that that we couldnt harken back to the past.

Everything would be new.

We didnt have that grounding to what madeGears,Gears.

What can you tell me about these new characters and how theyll venture to reach that same resonance?

I cant say what JD really is in two words.

Theyre not fully developed.

You look at Marcus, hes probably in his 40s inGears 1, hes pretty established.

His personality isnt going to change a lot over that time or the things that impact him.

Can you tell us a little about how that influences the story that youre telling?

The thing for us is, you know, well never be a survival horror game.

For me I really like the words tension and drama.

Its really where were trying to push.

Thats what were really trying to do with4.

Im hoping that theyre going to have a lot of fun with it.

So weve had this sort of emphasis and focus on all aspects of the product from the beginning.

I think it should be pretty exciting for people.

I wanted to try some new modes, new maps, new weapons, all the usual fun stuff.

I assume youre not talking about whether a certain wave-based mode returns that was really popular?

[Laughs]I am not talking about that.

The beta ends on May 1.
