As Matthew Ross new filmFrank & Lolaopens, Michael Shannon is in bed with Imogen Poots.

Theyre in the heat of passion.

The neon-lit skyline of Las Vegas can be seen out the window.

That thought lasts for about three minutes.

It turns out theres no rest for the wicked.

Shannon, who plays Frank, a classically trained chef, isnt exactly a bad guy.

Hes a classic film-noir sap like Robert Mitchum inOut of the Past.

Shannons intensity is the best thingFrank & Lolahas going for it.

And its almost enough to make it work.

The film just plops us into Frank and Lolas relationship.

Then, theres no turning back.

Except things arent as clear-cut Lola led him to believe.

But its Shannon whose wildcard intensity turnsFrank & Lolainto something more than the scripts collection of hardboiled implausibilities.B-
